HOUSTON, Tex. (May 26, 2005)--Coast Guard Fireman Joe Soliz, from Station Galveston, Texas, and Houston Zoo's Senior Veterinarian, Joe Flanagan, release a Logger Head turtle with an amputated flipper into the Gulf of Mexico 20 miles offshore. Three turtles were set free today, two Logger Head turtles and one small Hawksbill turtle after being rehabilitated at the Houston Downtown Aquarium and Houston Zoo's Kipp Aquarium. The turtles were found stranded on the beach and in need of medical attention.Twoof the turtles had to have a flipper amputated from injuries. The Coast Guard works with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and National Marine Fisheries Service to release turtles that have been rehabilitated. USCG photo by PA2 Andrew Kendrick
