First staged in 1999, this annual event provides an opportunity to train emergency responders to quickly set up and operate clinics in the event of a public health emergency. The clinics are a cooperative effort of the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Cameron County Department of Health and Human Services, Hidalgo County Health and Human Services, City of Laredo Health Department, Texas Military Department (TMD), Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps, Dental Health Management Solutions, other local health officials, and community volunteer groups. Traditional services occurring in the month of July include; immunizations, hearing and vision examinations, sports physicals, diabetic screening, and blood pressure screening. Locations in prior years have been within the southernmost region of Texas, more specifically the Rio Grande Valley. Involvement of the TMD serves a dual purpose; to provide preventative and medical services to underserved populations, and as training for future emergency response. show less
