Sacrifice for Freedom event to honor military families
The North Dakota National Guard Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (ND-TAPS) will kick off a weeklong event that honors North Dakota’s Fallen service members that will begin at 4 p.m. in Memorial Hall at North Dakota’s capitol building. The event will include Gov. Jack Dalrymple and the North Dakota Guard’s deputy adjutant general Brig. Gen Alan Dohrmann.

Spafford takes command of "Gunslingers"
The “Gunslinger” Battalion or 2nd Battalion, 153rd Infantry Regiment, of 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, welcomed Lt. Col. Todd Spafford as their new commander, May, 20, 2012. In the tradition of military ceremony, Lt. Col. Jon Stubbs, the outgoing commander, relinquished command of the battalion with the passing of the battalion’s Colors to Col. John “Mickey” Stewart, commander of the 39th Brigade. Symbolizing his trust and confidence in Spafford as the incoming commander, Stewart then passed the colors to his hands. Lt. Col. Spafford assumes command of the Gunslinger Battalion, May 20, 2012.

Familiar face returns as commander
Col. Kirk E. Van Pelt, the outgoing commander of the 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, relinquished his command to the incoming Commander Col. John “Mickey” Stewart. The change-of-command ceremony, held at Camp Robinson, May 19, 2012, personified one of the oldest and most cherished U.S. Army traditions, where the guidon, a unit’s banner affixed to a spear, is passed from the outgoing commander, Col. Van Pelt to the incoming commander, Col. Stewart and then returned to the unit’s most senior enlisted person, Command Sgt. Maj.Rick Megoloff, 39th IBCT Command Sergeant Major.
