Community gathers to honor soldiers after yearlong deployment
The Williston community, families, friends and loved ones all gathered Sunday to attend a Freedom Salute to honor more than 90 soldiers with the North Dakota National Guard’s 818th Engineer Company (Sapper), who returned to North Dakota at the end of March The ceremony was to formally welcome home the soldiers who deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as part of Task Force War Hammer from June 2012 to March 2013. They served as combat engineers, clearing routes of improvised explosive devices to protect coalition forces, ensuring safe movement and mission accomplishment.

Units collaborate to assist public during Ardent Sentry exercise
Although not normally seen together in the local community, two S.C. National Guard units, one chemical, the other infantry, worked seamlessly together today to practice assisting citizens during Ardent Sentry, a joint training exercise that runs May 17 through 21.
While the 108th Chemical Company took care of decontamination, the 4th Battalion, 118th Infantry Regiment provided security and assistance at the site, which was set up in front of the Hampton Regional Medical Center in Varnville.

Afghan 203rd Corps Engineer Kandak completes final test, ready for operations
At Camp Blackhorse, a Canadian training team busily worked with over 300 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers. Carrying hammers, saws, and driving bulldozers, these soldiers were working to pass their final test at the Consolidated Fielding Center (CFC), training to become the new Corps Engineer Kandak that would provide construction support for the entire ANA 203rd Corps.

Small unit with a big mission
The 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, “Allons” deployed to Paktika Province, Afghanistan, in early January. The “Allons” Battalion is the organic artillery battalion under the 2nd Brigade Combat Team “Commandos” (2/10 SFAB), 10th Mountain Division from Fort Drum, N.Y.
