KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents in Kunduz province last night while in pursuit of a Taliban sub-commander who facilitates weapons and orders improvised explosive device and rocket attacks against Afghan civilians and Afghan and coalition forces.

The commander is in regular contact with Taliban and Haqqani Network senior leaders located in Pakistan.

Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to peacefully exit the building. When no response was observed the assault force cleared and secured the buildings and detained two suspected insurgents.

No shots were fired and the women and children present were protected throughout the search.

Afghan and coalition forces have focused efforts in Kunduz province. Last week coalition forces conducted a precision strike against a Taliban sub-commander responsible for the July 2, attacks on the USAID station at the Ariana Hotel in Kunduz.

Several Kunduz officials reported the commander along with several of his associates, who were meeting to select the new Taliban shadow governor for the province, were killed and injured in the strike.

NATO forces are still gathering information in order to confirm these reports.
