KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan and international security forces conducted operations in Ghazni, Logar, Khost and Helmand provinces yesterday and last night.

Afghan National Police and the Sub-Governor of Ghazni province thwarted an insurgent attack in Khwajah Omari, Ghazni province yesterday.

Insurgents planned to attack the funeral procession for Mohammad Riza, the former head prosecutor for Khwajai Omari district, who was murdered by insurgents Friday.

Afghan forces set up a checkpoint outside of Deh Kuli village to disrupt the attack and insurgents attacked the checkpoint instead. When the Sub-Governor heard of the attack, he rushed to the scene with his personal bodyguards to support the ANP.

Several insurgents were killed and several ANP were wounded. ISAF forces transported one of the wounded ANP to an ISAF medical facility.

An Afghan-international security force detained several suspected insurgents in Logar province last night while pursuing a Taliban commander responsible for improvised explosive device attacks against coalition forces in Baraki Barak.

The combined security force went to a series of compounds near Qaryeh-ye Tawakal in Pul-e 'Alam District to search the area. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to peacefully exit the buildings and then secured the area.

No shots were fired and women and children present were protected by the combined security force.

A separate Afghan-international security force killed a suspected insurgent and detained several other suspected insurgents in Khost province last night while pursuing a Haqqani network weapons facilitator linked to IED attacks against coalition forces.

The combined security force targeted a compound north of the village of Majles in Sabari District. As the combined force secured the compound, one man assaulted a soldier and tried to grab the barrel of his weapon. The soldier engaged in self defense and shot the man.

Multiple automatic weapons, grenades and IED material was found and destroyed, and women and children present were protected by the combined security force.

Another Afghan-international security force detained a suspected insurgent during a clearing operation in Kunduz province last night.

The security force went to a compound with suspected insurgent activity in Hajji Amanollah, Chahar Darah District. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to peacefully exit the building and then secured the area.

No shots were fired and women and children present were protected by the combined force.

An Afghan-led patrol of Afghan Commandos and U.S. Special Operations Forces discovered a weapons cache in Helmand province yesterday.

The patrol, intended to establish security and locate known insurgents operating in and around Mirmandab and Heydarabad villages, came under attack several times by insurgents using RPGs, machine guns and small-arms.

An Afghan woman suffered a shrapnel wound to her leg in one of the insurgent attacks and was treated by USSOF medics. Two wounded insurgents were also treated and then detained.

While searching a series of buildings, the security force found four IEDs connected to a 12 kilogram jug of home-made explosives, three rocket propelled grenades and a launcher, three 82mm mortars, hand-held radios and batteries.

The combined force met with village elders who authorized the safe destruction of the building housing the weapons cache to protect village residents.

ISAF has uncovered a plot by the Taliban to illegally confiscate supplies and food goods intended for distribution to the people of Kandahar. These essential items, which are destined to non-governmental organizations for distribution to the people, were to be hijacked and held by the Taliban for their own use. ISAF is supporting the Government of Afghanistan to uncover the extent of these planned hijackings and will work with local officials to ensure the Taliban are unsuccessful in the interdiction of essential materials.

"This once again shows that the Taliban only care about their own interests and not those of the Afghan people and shows the lengths they will go to support their aims," said ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director Col. William Maxwell.
