MANDARIN, Haiti – In partnership with the government of Haiti, a New Horizons-Haiti 2010 school renovation project in Desronvilles near Gonaives, Haiti, began taking shape this week as students from the school began their summer break.
Helping to lead the engineering project and others in the area is Sgt Maj. James Vicellio, a Louisiana National Guard Soldier from Zachary who provides project management. His engineering troops from Task Force “Kout Men,” Creole for “Helping Hands” began leveling walls at the school in Desronvilles in preparation for installing a new roof. The engineering project is one of four currently taking place near Gonaives in the Artibonite Department from June through the end of September.
Vicellio feels the new roof the New Horizons engineers are constructing will enhance the lives of the children attending school in Desronvilles by promoting a safer learning environment where they can learn and grow as individuals. “It’s all about the kids here and helping them have a brighter future and better tomorrow,” said Vicellio.
The goal of the New Horizons mission is to provide tangible humanitarian engineer and medical assistance to the people of Haiti and support long-term U.S. recovery operations in Haiti while supporting the readiness of U.S. forces. Better government-to-government and people-to-people relations mean better responses to the challenges that face our partners in Haiti.
