FARAH, Afghanistan — Leaders of the Farah Provincial Government held a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new high school in Masow Village of the Pusht Rod District of Farah province, Afghanistan, Jan. 24.

The school will host over 300 students from throughout the Pusht Rod District and will offer classes in reading, writing, mathematics, English, natural science, and history.

Provincial Governor Rahool Amin attended the ceremony and he not only officially dedicated the school, but also personally handed out over 100 new school bags to the children in attendance.

"This is a great day for the Afghan families across the Pusht Rod District; it is especially great for the children," said Gov. Amin enthusiastically. "Thanks to the security gains made here by the Afghan National Army, the Afghan National Police, and the U.S. Marines, we are able to open new doors of education for our youth and new hope for their futures."

ANP members provided security for the ceremony, which included a tour of the new schoolhouse for everyone present, including Farah ANP Chief Mohammad Fagir Askar, and lunch.

During his remarks to the large crowd on hand for the ceremony, Chief Askar assured the crowd that his police officers will keep the school safe for their children.

"Look around you," Chief Askar told the crowd. "Your countrymen are standing tall to protect you and they will continue to do so here at this new school. Many of those policemen never had a chance for an education, but thanks to their sacrifices, many others now will."
