CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait — If 2009 was any indication, Third Army anticipates accomplishing even more in 2010.

Third Army is focused on supporting the ground commanders amid the ever changing priorities in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. With the build-up in Afghanistan, the responsible drawdown from Iraq, ongoing theater security cooperation events and the strategic relocation to Shaw Air Force Base, Third Army can be proud of its accomplishments as 2009 ends and 2010 begins.

In 2009 Third Army's mission to sustain the fight by providing logistics and personnel support for U.S. and coalition operations in the CENTCOM area of operations resulted in over 7,500 convoys, 55.2 million miles driven, more than 4200 MRAPs delivered, 620 million gallons of fuel issued, 1.5 million passengers flown, 292 million meals served, 657 million liters of bottled water and 2.2 billion supply item requests.

"Every single day, we distribute enough water to supply all of the city of Tampa [Florida]; we distribute enough fuel every day to fill every car in Washington, D.C.," said Brig. Gen. John O'Connor, Third Army director of Logistics, putting it into perspective.

The responsible drawdown mission started in May, with almost 20,000 shipping containers, 11,000 rolling stock and 9,000 personnel moved out of Iraq by the end of the year.

"The most important task for Third Army is to provide support to the war fighters in our two current combat operations," said Lt. Gen. William G. Webster, Third Army Commander. "The process is complex, but we are executing a well thought out plan, and have the flexibility to adjust, when necessary, to accommodate the responsible drawdown timeline."

Third Army has trained and conducted operations in 18 of the 20 countries in CENTCOM's area of responsibility, resulting in increased partner nation capability and improved interoperability and cooperation.

As Third Army embarks on 2010, "setting the theater" will define the way ahead. There will be challenges with a mission of this magnitude, but 2009 proved that Third Army is more than capable of meeting or exceeding those challenges. U.S. Forces can count on Third Army to ensure they are equipped for the fight.
