DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — Africa Partnership Station East wrapped up its weeklong training engagement involving APS maritime instructors and members of the Tanzanian Navy with a graduation ceremony held on the flight deck of the APS East platform High Speed Vessel Swift.

APS East arrived in Tanzania on Monday and immediately began APS training and maritime exchanges between the international staff embarked on Swift and USS Nicholas and members of the Tanzanian navy.

"I am encouraged and inspired by what we, together, have been able to achieve during this APS visit to Dar es Salaam," said Capt. James Tranoris, commander, APS East. "It truly exemplifies the spirit and commitment of the U.S. Navy, the Tanzania Peoples Defense Force and all our African partners toward enhancing their own regional maritime capacity and capability through collaborative partnerships."

Over 130 members of the Tanzanian Navy received maritime training in basic ground skills, instructional theory, law of war/ethics, medical response, pier security, small boat maintenance, and visit, board, search and seizure. The training was conducted by APS instructors from the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. The graduation ceremony showcased the maritime partnerships between Tanzania, regional African partners and the United States.

"The training conducted on Swift and Nicholas has been very successful. These Sailors have learned valuable skills that they can take back to their units and adapt to their everyday mission," said Tanzanian Navy Maj. Jumaa Kassi, APS training officer and senior Tanzanian staff officer aboard Swift.

Training was not the only event conducted by APS East in Tanzania. Over 40 Sailors from Swift and Nicholas volunteered to clean and make repairs at the Kidz Care Orphanage in Dar es Salaam. During the project, Sailors painted, dug a trench for water piping, laid cement tile, hung window treatments and performed basic cleaning around the orphanage. Upon completion of the project, Sailors played soccer and football with the children at the orphanage.

In addition to the orphanage visit, both ships participated in sporting events (football and basketball) with their counterparts from the Tanzanian Navy. APS East also brought the gift of music to share with the people of Dar es Salaam. Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe band, 'Brass Quintet', performed for over one thousand school children at the Msimbazi Mseto, Uhuru and Makongo Primary Schools and conducted a workshop and joint musical performance with students at the University of Dar es Salaam.

Swift and Nicholas will visit ports in Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles and Tanzania. The ships bring teams of maritime experts from the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps to provide training and participate in exercises with their African counterparts. Combat lifesaving; damage control; law of war; visit, board, search and seizure; small boat operations/maintenance and physical security are a few of the capabilities onboard.

In addition to these visits, Swift and Nicholas have embarked 26 African ship riders from Kenya, Mozambique and Tanzania to conduct professional exchanges in at-sea training on damage control, engineering, medical, navigation and watch standing.

Swift and Nicholas are on scheduled deployments within the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility. APS East is being conducted in cooperation with Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Africa, a component of U.S. Africa Command.
