KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan-international security force stopped a vehicle in an area east of the village of Hajji Ooddust, in the Panjway District of Kandahar yesterday. During the stop the joint security force detained several insurgents and killed a Taliban IED facilitator responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
In Kandahar last night, an Afghan-international security force searched a compound outside the town of De Maynard Chinah, in the Maiwand District and detained a pair of suspected militants.
In Kunduz last night, a joint security force searched a compound in the village of Isa Kheyl, in the Char Darrah District. During the search the Afghan-international force faced an imminent threat and then took hostile gunfire. The security force returned fire, killing three militants.
Multiple weapons were found on site, including rocket-propelled grenade rounds.
While flying back to the base the assault force helicopters received hostile fire from rocket propelled grenades and small arms.
The aircraft immediately returned fire, killing two militants. The helicopters were not damaged and returned to the base without incident.
In Logar last night, an Afghan-international security force searched a compound in the village of Woni Sofla, in the Pul-e-Alam District and detained a suspected militant.
In other operations, a joint ANA-ISAF patrol discovered 240 kilograms (540 lbs.) of ammonium nitrate and a weapon in the Zharay District of Kandahar yesterday. The ammonium nitrate was in containers typically used in IEDs.
Counter-IED experts say this could have been turned into nearly 500 kilograms (1,000 lbs.) home-made explosives.
Ammonium nitrate based home-made explosives continue to be used in the production of IED's causing the majority of civilian and ISAF casualties in Afghanistan.
In September 2009, ISAF received permission from the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to "confiscate any supplies of ammonium nitrate fertilizers being kept or transported in Afghanistan."
In Helmand yesterday, a combined Afghan Border Police-ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache after coming under fire by insurgents in the Reg-e Khan District.
The cache contained 10 RPG warheads, two RPG launchers, 16 circuit boards, 11 IED initiators, nine pressure plates, six time delay devices, three hand-held radios, two AK-47's, and other IED making materials.
In another operation in Helmand yesterday, a combined ANSF-ISAF vehicle force seized 60 kilograms (130 lbs.) of processed heroin and a small quantity of opium after the driver of the vehicle it was in tried run through a vehicle checkpoint in the Nawah-ye-Barakzai district. As ANA soldiers were trying to detain the man, he accelerated his vehicle dragging an ANA Soldier toward other soldiers. Soldiers fired warning shots, attempted to fire vehicle-disabling shots, and when that didn't work fired lethal shots into the vehicle wounding the driver, who later died of his wounds.
The ANA soldier was not seriously injured.
No innocent Afghan civilians were harmed during these operations.
