KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan-international security force searched a compound north of the village of Seyyed Amon in the Nawah-ye-Barakzai District of Helmand province last night after intelligence confirmed militant activity in the area and detained the suspected militants.
In an operation in Kandahar last night, an Afghan-international security force searched a compound in north Kandahar City and detained suspected militants.
No shots were fired and no Afghan citizens were harmed during either operation.
In other operations, an Afghan-international security force discovered two steel cylinders full of explosives in the Garm Ser District of Helmand today and a bag containing a similar cylinder yesterday. Both finds were destroyed where they were found.
In Kandahar today, an Afghan-international force discovered a cache containing estimates of up to 800 cubic meters of marijuana and turned the find over to the Afghan national police for destruction.
In the Ghazni province yesterday, a joint security force discovered a cache of ammunition including 132 12.7 mm rounds and four 23 mm rounds, which it destroyed.

Afghan medical providers learn from PRT
The medical commander of the Farah Provincial Reconstruction Team, Cmdr. Harvey Wilds, arranged for eight Afghan medical providers from Farah Hospital, including the chief of surgery and chief anesthesiologist, to attend a training class at the Forney Clinic located on the base Dec. 24.
The class covered how to set up and use a ventilator and an electrocautery tool (electrically charged scalpel) for cutting or cauterizing during surgery.
Both pieces of equipment belong to the Farah Hospital and were provided by previous PRT medical teams. Wilds had the instruments transported to FOB Farah and asked for volunteers to teach.
"They learned a lot and we will be providing them directions translated into Dari and Pashto," said Wilds.
A registered nurse anesthetist with the Forward Surgical Team, Lt. Cmdr. Dante Villecco, served as the instructor for the ventilator portion of the class and explained the basic parts and procedures for the breathing machine.
Once the ventilator class concluded, the students met a new teacher, Lt. Larry Zoback, a peri-operative nurse demonstrated the electrocautery tool.
He pointed out several precautions the medical providers should take into account when using the equipment including fire and electrocution hazards. Each student practiced cutting into a piece of steak and cauterizing the edge along the incision.
"The electrocautery tool will permit operations to be performed with a significant reduction of blood loss by the patient," said Wilds.
In the future, the Farah PRT will be working with the Italian army Task Force South personnel at FOB Farah to translate a user's manual for an Italian electro physiotherapy machine that was given to the hospital.
