    Operational Update, Oct. 3: Afghan-International Security Forces Kill, Detain Militants in Paktika, Kandahar; ISAF Casualties

    KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan and international security forces killed and detained several suspected militants in separate operations today after searching buildings known for Haqqani militant activity in Paktika province and a compound associated with a Taliban facilitator and his element in Kandahar province.

    During the search in Paktika province the joint force killed suspected militants attempting to employ improvised explosive devices against the force, and in another building the force killed a suspect who posed an imminent threat.

    During the search in Kandahar province the joint force found 750 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, a chemical compound commonly used in making IEDs. The force destroyed the chemical onsite, and one insurgent was detained.

    No Afghan civilians were harmed in the operations.

    ISAF Casualties

    In three separate incidents, five International Security Assistance Force service members were killed as result of enemy activity in southern and eastern Afghanistan in the past 24 hours.

    On Oct. 2, one U.S. service member died of wounds sustained in an improvised explosive device detonation in eastern Afghanistan.

    Two U.S. service members were killed, Oct. 2, in an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan.

    In another incident two U.S. service members died of wounds sustained in a hostile attack in eastern Afghanistan, Oct. 2.

    Further details are being withheld until next-of-kin notification has been made.
