KABUL, Afghanistan - After an extensive engagement with insurgents fighting from a compound in Nad Ali district, an International Security Assistance Force aircraft dropped a single precision-guided bomb on insurgent's position in the compound, Sept. 30.
Following the engagement, ISAF received reports of a number of persons killed in the compound, including women and children. A shura on the incident is being held today between village elders and ISAF.
Also a number of civilians with injuries reported to ISAF troops and were given immediate medical attention or were transported to an ISAF hospital for treatment.
"Afghanistan continues to be a dangerous place and the loss of any life is a significant loss to the families involved and our forces here," said Col. Wayne Shanks, an ISAF spokesman. "I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends for their loss."
ISAF values every life, takes every possible precaution to avoid harming civilians and is looking into the incident.
Militants Detained, Killed
Afghan and International Security Forces detained and killed several suspected Taliban militants in separate search operations conducted in Kandahar, Logar and Ghazni provinces Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, against Taliban elements responsible for suicide bomb and other indiscriminate attacks.
During the compound search near Kandahar City the joint force received hostile fire. Acting defensively the force killed several militants. As a result of the site search the force removed multiple assault rifles, a machine gun, grenades and communication gear. All items were destroyed in place.
During the joint force search in Logar province an armed militant was killed when he displayed hostile intent. A local Afghan civilian was also wounded during this mission. The joint force provided immediate medical care and transported him to nearby hospital.
During the operation conducted in the Nawa district of Ghazni province, no shots were fired and no one was injured while the force detained suspected militants responsible for facilitating Taliban activity in Zabul and Ghazni provinces.
No ISAF service members were killed over the past 24 hours.
