PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii - U.S. Naval Region Commander Rear Admiral Dixon Smith acknowledges October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month by signing the annual proclamation at the Fleet & Family Support Center — Hawaii located at Moanalua Navy Services Center, Sept. 28, 2009.
The Fleet & Family Support Center has worked with the Region Commander for the last four years in the fight against domestic violence, said Chet Adessa, the Family Advocacy Prevention specialist for the Navy in Hawaii.
"We've been doing the domestic violence proclamation for the last five years," said Adessa. "By making more people aware of domestic violence, we're getting more people involved," Adessa added.
"I consider it an honor and a privilege to sign this proclamation highlighting and focusing on the efforts that you all do, not just through the month of October, but throughout the year," said Rear Adm. Smith. "My real dream is to not have to sign one of these and with the efforts that you do day-in and day-out, we will get there," Rear Adm. added.
Along with Rear Adm. Smith in attendance were Hawaii state Sen. Will Espero; Hawaii House Representative Lynn Finnegan; and 2009 Miss Hawaii, Ms. Raeceen Woolford.
Rep. Finnegan and Sen. Espero thanked Adm. Smith for his support with the proclamation and eliminating domestic violence.
"There are a lot of bad things that happen to very good people and by doing this, I know that you are you are not only saving lives, but you are saving the lives of people that are good who are in the military as well," said Rep. Finnegan.
Before being crowned Miss Hawaii, Woolford worked with Adessa in dealing with children and other projects. Upon learning of this event, Woolford took the opportunity to help spread the word throughout the communities of Hawaii.
"It's my job to help promote positive messages in the community and help people get involved," said Woolford. "I know that this community can support each other when we rally together and then change can happen," said Woolford.
The ceremony also highlighted a table setting for four individuals. The four individuals were victims were killed, as a result of spousal abuse will forever be absent from the dinner table among other things.
There will be seven events in October to help promote Domestic Awareness Month throughout the island.
