Kunar provincial officials and Kunar Provincial Reconstruction Team members opened the Badel Road, Sept. 13, with hopes to improve security and development in the Narang district.
The 4.8 kilometer paved road will provide access to an area that has been relatively isolated up to this point by linking the Badel valley to the Asadabad-Jalalabad corridor.
According to Army Sgt. Stewart Yates, PRT Civil Affairs team sergeant, the opening of the road is a success story for the district.
"Roads are a great way to connect the people to their provincial and district governments and vice versa," Yates said. "This road increases the ability of the Afghan army and police to respond to emergencies and security threats, allow village residents to get medical assistance quicker and allow residents to get their products to market easier."
The sergeant said the project supported the provincial and district leaders desire to improve the area. While some work remains to be completed on the road by the local contractor, overall residents are pleased to have it open to traffic.
"They're happy with the road. They like the freedom of movement the road provides," Yates said. "They're grateful for the development, and they know with roads more projects will follow. They know the road helps bring prosperity and security to their district."
Yates said the PRT's role on these types of projects is to work with local leaders to complete projects that bring security, stability and economic development to the area.
