SOUTHWEST ASIA — Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations June 5, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.
In Afghanistan, a UK Royal Air Force GR-9 Harrier and a coalition aircraft responded to a firefight in Chahar Bagh after anti-Afghan forces attacked coalition forward base with assault rifles and rocket propelled grenades. Coalition personnel tracked enemy forces to a compound where the Harrier struck them with a Paveway guided munition. A coalition aircraft also carried out a show of force in the area to deter further enemy aggression.
An Air Force MQ-1B Predator used a Hellfire missile to take out a group of insurgents who had conducted an RPG attack against a friendly unit near Tarin Kowt. The individuals were identified carrying a rocket launcher prior to the weapon release.
In the vicinity of Ghazni, a GR-9 struck an anti-Afghan forces group attempting to emplace an improvised explosive device on a public roadway using a Paveway. The aircraft also conducted a show of force over a compound where additional enemy personnel had taken cover following the strike, supporting a ground operation against the compound.
An Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle conducted a show of force in the Ghazni area as well, preventing enemy forces from attacking an Afghan and coalition convoy. The convoy completed its mission to transport reconstruction supplies without interference.
Joint Terminal Attack Controllers assigned to coalition units verified the success of these missions.
In total, 54 close air support missions were flown in support of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.
Nineteen Air Force surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. In addition, two coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.
In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 10 close air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities, and helped to deter and disrupt hostile activities.
Twenty-four Air Force and Navy surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. In addition, four Air Force and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.
U.S. Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Horn of Africa.
Approximately 110 airlift sorties were flown; 710 tons of cargo was delivered; and about 2,560 passengers were transported. This included about 144,000 pounds of aerial resupply cargo dropped over Afghanistan.
Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.
On Jun 4, U.S. Air Force aerial refueling crews flew 55 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.2 million pounds of fuel to 257 receiving aircraft.
