KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan and coalition forces detained four suspected insurgents this morning during raids in Khost to locate and capture al-Qaida members who had infiltrated into eastern Afghanistan.

In Khost city, the combined force searched several compounds where forces believed insurgents were staying. Without incident, forces located and detained four suspected foreign fighters. No shots were fired and no one was injured.

The suspects are believed to be associated with an al-Qaida leader who has been responsible for recruiting Kuwaiti and Pakistani extremists for fighting in Afghanistan, threatening to strengthen al Qaida's presence, namely in the eastern provinces.

Afghan forces questioned locals who indicated that several of the arrested men were from Pakistan and had arrived in Khost a few days earlier.

Forces discovered and removed a hand grenade, bolt-action rifle and two pistols from the compounds where the suspects were captured.
