DECATUR, Ala. - The 142nd Signal Brigade in Decatur will leave the force structure of the Alabama Army National Guard at the end of August 2008. An inactivation ceremony for the 142nd Brigade are held when the brigade colors will be cased for the final time.

The program will be held Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Fort Quarles-Flowers Reserve Center, 1848 Beltline Road SW in Decatur. In the ceremony, the 142nd colors will be encased for the final time, symbolizing the elimination of the unit from the Army's troop structure.

The inactivation is part of a transformation currently underway in the active Army, Army National Guard and Army Reserve. The final goal of the action is an Army capable of meeting the challenges of today's war on terror while, at the same time, preparing to fight the wars of tomorrow.

Transformation will provide commanders units that are lighter and more mobile that are designed and configured for specific missions as needed.

Four signal battalions assigned to the 142nd are involved in the process and will be transforming. Three of the battalions are in Alabama and one is an active Army unit, the 29th Signal Battalion at Fort Lewis, Wash. The Alabama battalions are headquartered in Florence, Huntsville and Mobile.

The 279th Signal Battalion will hold its inactivation ceremony, Sat., Aug. 2, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will be held at Fort Jackson M. Balch armory, 2499 Johnson Road in Huntsville.

The 115th Signal Battalion in Florence will convert to the 115th Integrated Theater Signal Battalion with the battalion headquarters moving from Florence to Decatur. The 711th Signal Battalion from the Mobile area will transform to a Brigade Support Battalion in Sept. 2009.

The 29th Signal Battalion at Fort Lewis has already converted to another unit and no longer falls under the command and control of the 142nd. A number of new units with other missions have been allocated to the Alabama Guard and will be placed in towns that lose troops under the transformation.
