FORWARD OPERATING BASE KALSE, Iraq – One Vanguard Soldier spends more than half of every month traveling throughout the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division area of operation to ensure Soldiers have the highest possible quality of life.

Capt. Alex Bonilla, preventive medicine officer for 703rd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th BCT, weaves his way across the area of operations, surveying the living, working, eating and recreational conditions of Vanguard Soldiers.

Over the course of a month, the Utuado, Puerto Rico, native, makes trips to each of the forward operating bases, patrol bases, combat outposts and joint security stations in the Vanguard area.

He travels to each location to evaluate their food service, water supplies and living conditions to ensure the Soldiers are not being exposed to harmful agents and to assist each unit in making improvements for Soldiers.

"The thing I'm most proud of is seeing how much the living conditions for our Soldiers in PBs and JSS have changed since we took over," Bonilla said. "Dramatic changes ... give me an awesome feeling of satisfaction and assurance that Soldiers are well taken care of."

Along with conducting evaluations on existing locations, Bonilla said he is also tasked to evaluate proposed sites for new patrol bases and combat outposts. He said he has spent countless hours in the various cities of Babil province inspecting potential sites that may one day become patrol bases.
