FORWARD OPERATING BASE KALSU, Iraq – Soldiers and local council members came together at a town council meeting Jan. 14 in Seddah, near Iskandariyah.

"The purpose of coming out here was to engage the Seddah city council with issues within the city," said 1st Lt. Josh Ray, fire support officer, Company C, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.

Ray, from Brighton, Mich., said the council holds weekly meetings and this was the second attended by Soldiers. Security concerns prevented Soldiers from attending meetings in the past.

"(Extremist) influence has limited our ability going into the city," Ray said. "We didn't want to put Soldiers into harm."

Numerous checkpoints have been emplaced around the city and more are coming.

"The security situation within the town has gotten better," Ray said. "We are now able to turn a share of our focus onto Seddah because they are just as important."

Members of the council discussed various projects within Seddah that need to be completed.

"The main problem we have in the city right now is the power," said Haydar Mohassan Ali, Seddah city council chairman.

Though the city has many projects, Soldiers in the unit have turned their focus on the city's schools, Ray said.

"One big thing for Chaos Company is schools," Ray said. "We want a place for kids to be able to go to."

The council members expressed their appreciation for the Soldiers' efforts.

"The people of Iraq will never forget what the coalition forces have done for us," Mohassan Ali said.
