KABUL, Afghanistan — A joint Afghan Ministry of Defense and International Security Assistance Force investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting by an Afghan Army soldier that led to the death and injury of several individuals at a weapons training area near Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan earlier today.
As a result, two U.S. civilians and two Afghan soldiers, including the suspected shooter, were killed; one ISAF and one ANA service member were wounded. The incident occurred during routine weapons proficiency training at the Regional Military Training Center’s Basic Warrior Training Course at Camp Shaheen.
The suspected individual was thought to be an Afghan army trainer assigned to Camp Shaheen.
“Our joint investigation will find out how such an event could have occurred to help us prevent any future acts,” said Afghan Ministry of Defense spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Zahir Azimi. “We wish to express our deepest sorrow for the deaths of our colleagues in this tragic event today.”
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family members of our fallen comrades. The actions of this individual are not representative of the thousands of men and women who train and fight side-by-side with ISAF everyday to protect their fellow citizens from insurgent brutality,” said Brig. Gen. Josef Blotz, ISAF spokesperson.
Basic Warrior Training is the entry-level course for all ANA soldiers.
