ADA Soldiers take part in community clean up

FORT HOOD, Texas — Soldiers from the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery of the 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade put their landscaping techniques to the test on "Make a Difference Day" at the Hope Pregnancy Center in Copperas Cove Oct. 23.

The Soldiers did a lot of landscaping and normal yard work such as cutting grass, trimming shrubs and pulling weeds. They also painted new lines in the center's parking lot, said 1st Sgt. Charles Cook, the first sergeant for HHB, 69th ADA Bde.

In addition to yard work, the Soldiers also donated just over 1,160 diapers along with other items such as blankets, baby clothes and baby wipes to the Hope Pregnancy Center, a nonprofit organization that offers assistance and knowledge to pregnant women throughout the area.

Hope Pregnancy Center has four locations throughout the area: two in Killeen, one in Temple and one in Copperas Cove.

The pregnancy center is a place where women can come to share their feelings and thoughts about their pregnancy, and workers at the center listen to what the future mothers' needs are and respond to those needs as best as they can, said Annette Kemp, the center director of the Hope Pregnancy Center.

"About one third of our clients are teens," Kemp said.

Whether the client is a teen or a mature adult, it is important for them to know what resources are available to them throughout the area and at the center.

The center talks to pregnant women about their pregnancy options, healthy lifestyle choices, and abstinence. The center also offers free parenting classes, pregnancy tests and ultra sounds, conducted by qualified professionals, to those who may not be able to afford them otherwise.

Without the help of the Soldiers cleaning up the outside of the pregnancy center, a lot of the yard work would have gone undone, Kemp said. The center was grateful of the Soldiers willingness to clean up, and their donations help to stock up the center's supplies.

Not only was the center grateful for the Soldiers' landscaping skills, but it was a good opportunity for the Soldiers to get out of their every day activities.

"It's good for our surrounding communities to see our Soldiers can do more than just what we are doing on CNN," Cook said.

A lot of the Soldiers had a good time working at the pregnancy center. It was something different, he added.
