CAMP ATTERBURY, U.S. – Three years ago, Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center and Atterbury Job Corps Center established a work-based learning partnership that has been flourishing and growing ever since.

AJCC is located just north of the camp and accommodates 550 students. Students attend daily classes and have opportunities to attend career training at Camp Atterbury.

"Camp Atterbury's relationship with the Atterbury Job Corps Center acts as a co-op partnership," said Lt. Col. Ron Morris, deputy commander, Camp Atterbury. "Job Corps students have a place to experience hands-on working outside of the academic portion of their training and the installation benefits from the services provided by the students."

The newest career training opportunity at Camp Atterbury for Job Corps students is the chance to practice and enhance their skills. Since kitchens at AJCC are being renovated, space is being offered at Camp Atterbury at the United Service Organization building. Every Tuesday, students prepare and serve food to Camp Atterbury personnel at the dining facility in the USO.

"This is a great chance for students to practice working in a restaurant environment and for Soldiers to enjoy a well-cooked meal," said camp commander Col. Barry Richmond.

Along with providing space for students to get hands-on experience, Camp Atterbury also offers internships. Once a student reaches a certain point in his or her training at AJCC, Aleisha Asher, an AJCC liaison, places him or her with a department at Camp Atterbury for a six week internship.

"These internships provide valuable training and work skills to job corps students and help the base's productivity," Morris said.

Departments here at Camp Atterbury that sponsor internships include the military police, judge advocate general, Department of Public Works and Soldier Readiness Center. Internships are part of the AJCC training and are not paid positions. These internships, however, offer the students skills that can be applied to jobs here on post and in the community after graduation from the AJCC.

"The relationship between Camp Atterbury and the job corps helps the installation better understand job corps students and vise versa," Morris said.

Further expanding the partnership and opportunities between Camp Atterbury and AJCC, a new memorandum of understanding was signed Feb. 12. The memorandum added the Speakers, Tutors, Achievement, Retention, and Success program.

The STARS program provides Soldiers with the opportunity to volunteer to go over to AJCC and mentor students during students' free time. AJCC provides activities, such as pool, basketball, video games, and a lounge for Soldiers and students to connect with each other.

"This program will promote good attitude and provide moral support to the students," Richmond said. "It will also offer a mentor for the students to look up to."
