Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO
BAGHDAD, Iraq – Iraqi security forces, coalition forces and Sons of Iraq have killed or captured 78 terrorists and special group cell members this week in a series of engagements and precision operations throughout Baghdad.
National police and Multi-National Division – Baghdad soldiers detained six suspected terrorists linked to a rocket attack that struck areas of the Victory Base Complex and West Rashid Feb. 18. The attack killed five Iraqi civilians and wounded 14.
Despite a recent series of attacks against the people of Baghdad, ISF and CF, as well as SOI, remain committed to combating terrorism and protecting the Iraqi people.
"These recent terrorist attacks have been an obvious ploy intended to disrupt successful reconciliation efforts by attempting to foment sectarian violence," said Brig. Gen. Mike Milano, deputy commanding general, MND-B. "We will not tire in our efforts to bring these murderers to justice."
In their attempts to kill coalition and Iraqi security forces, the terrorists have killed 16 Iraqi civilians and wounded approximately 56.
"Under the premise of attacking coalition and Iraqi security forces, the terrorists have continued their campaign of indiscriminately killing and maiming women and children," said Milano. "Their attempt to intimidate the good Iraqi people to gain their support, and at the same time use them as targets to gain attention, is obviously twisted."
Five Iraqi national policemen were killed and 10 injured when an enemy rocket they were attempting to disarm exploded at approximately 8:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in eastern Baghdad.
While en route to an indirect fire attack on an MND-B combat outpost, national police from 2nd Battalion, 8th Brigade, 2nd national police discovered a dump truck with rocket systems aimed at the combat outpost.
"The Iraqi police heroically responded to a rocket attack to protect their people," said Milano. "They put themselves in extreme danger to save the lives of their fellow citizens. Their bravery in the face of danger shows their determination to safeguard their nation in the fight against terrorists.
"(On Feb. 18, terrorists) killed five Iraqi citizens and wounded 14; five of those injured were children, (including an infant.) This is yet another failed attempt by terrorists and special groups to derail reconciliation that has once again resulted in the deaths of innocent Iraqi citizens," Milano said.
ISF and CF will continue to aggressively pursue AQI and special group cell members because they indiscriminately target and murder civilians, said Milano.
"The reason we are hunting the enemy down is because they kill innocent civilians. There is no where we won't go to chase them down," Milano said.
