FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELTA, Iraq – Seventeen businessmen from Wasit province received insight into the contracting process at FOB Delta Feb. 6.
The training, provided by the 214th Fires Brigade Provincial Reconstruction Team and the Joint Contracting Command – Iraq/Afghanistan, is designed to assist business owners in better understanding the U.S. government contracting process and improve their opportunities competing and being awarded U.S. contracts, said Joanne Jensen, business adviser for the PRT.
"We are developing skills needed to compete in a world market, one that is competitive and not subsidized by a government," she said.
The training helps develop skills required to secure private and governmental contracts, including proposal writing, cost estimation and working with contracting offices, Jensen said.
"This allows for the development of a more efficient way to conduct business," Jensen said. "The business owners are very appreciative of any opportunity that assists them in learning about business opportunities and competing."
Businessman Jafer Mahdi said the training made him aware of different programs that will add value to his career.
For Dhaya R. Abdullah, a civil engineer with Abraj Aljanoob Company, the training provided a lot of information about contracting procedures and different projects available in the province.
"We want to help the Iraqi vendors to participate in the reconstruction program and to facilitate their requirements to act as a bidder," said Mustafa Salman, a host-nation business adviser with the Regional Contracting Center.
Investment in the province has begun as the RCC was able to get three branches of a bank into Wasit province, Salman said.
The JCC-I/A's mission is to provide contracting support of supplies, services and construction to commanders of coalition forces in the reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan to help with capacity building and economic independence in the two countries.
