BAGHDAD — Multi-National Force - Iraq provides multiple educational opportunities for juvenile detainees at the Dar Al Hikmah, or "House of Wisdom," educational and rehabilitation facility near the Baghdad International Airport.
Juvenile detainees are bused daily from the Theater Internment Facility at Camp Cropper to attend the school.
The curriculum offered to detainee students was developed through a partnership with the Iraqi ministries of Education, Youth and Sports, and Higher Education to prepare the juveniles to continue their education in the Iraqi school system upon reintegration into society.
The educational courses offered to the students consist of eight core subjects: Arabic, English, math, science, civics, geography, library/art and sports.
Many juvenile detainees have not received an adequate or consistent education. Arabic courses teach students to read and write their native language. In Arabic Literature classes, students develop reading at a minimum fifth-grade level. The library at Dar Al Hikmah provides students with books in Arabic, encouraging students to build upon their reading level.
Civics and history courses give students an appreciation of Iraq's rich history and how the nation's past is tied to its future. Students are provided instruction on the foundation and the function of Iraq's new democratic government.
Science, geography and math lessons present each subject's major concepts, in order to provide students with a foundation to continue their education and become productive members in their communities.
The juvenile detainee Art program provides students with a better understanding of their culture's rich artistic heritage. Students are able to express themselves through various art mediums such as painting, drawing and clay.
Juveniles attending Dar al Hikmah are offered the opportunity to participate in athletic activities under the supervision of an athletic instructor. Students participate daily in soccer games - the most popular activity - to keep physically fit and to cultivate a healthy competitive spirit.
MNF-I recognizes and accepts the responsibilities inherent to juvenile detention. It continually evaluates its care and custody provisions and reintegration programs to ensure juveniles are afforded every opportunity to prepare themselves for successful reintegration into Iraqi society.
