QUANTICO, Va. - The sound of taps filled the humid morning air as hundreds of community members bowed their heads in silence paying respect to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
The Potomac Region Veterans Council hosted its annual Memorial Day ceremony at Quantico National Cemetery, May 28.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to be here today,” said Col. David W. Maxwell, base commander for Quantico. “It’s patriotism like this that keeps the fabric of this country together.”
The ceremony included a musical selection by the Quantico Marine Band Brass Quintet.
“I have a son buried out here,” said Jim Fullem, who was drafted into the Army in 1961. “Taps always get to me. It’s was great to see the band come out and play for our fallen brothers.”
Steven Fezler, director of Quantico National Cemetery and guest speaker, shared his experience of when his father served who served in the Navy during World War II.
“Freedom isn’t free,” Fezler said. “The air we breathe and the land we stand upon has been paid for by our veterans. This day is not about political visions; it is a day to recognize our veterans for their courage.”
Throughout the ceremony community members could be seen remembering passed family heroes.
“I come out to honor my dad,” said Scott Bartlett, a Stafford native. “I bring my kids along so that my father’s legacy is never forgotten.”
The ceremony ended with a firing detail and a wreath presentation, by Maxwell, Fezler and Thom Karlson, the chairman for the PRVC.
“As I sat out here, I reflected on the Young Marines who were out here helping with the ceremony,” said Sgt. Major Laura L. Brown, Quantico Base sergeant major. “Seeing those young devil dogs carrying their organization colors was like a passing of the guard. They have youth on their side and I hope they understand the significance of today.”
