Uh I 10:36.631 --> 10:36.369 became the Chief of Staff of the Air 10:36.380 --> 10:38.491 Force roughly about the same week Dan 10:38.491 --> 10:40.713 became Chief of the NASA Guard Bureau . 10:40.719 --> 10:43.159 Um , but the one thing that uh Dan has 10:43.169 --> 10:45.630 shared with me and uh talked about and 10:45.640 --> 10:48.270 uh about Kelly is that uh uh they're 10:48.280 --> 10:50.559 runners and I'll talk more about dans 10:50.570 --> 10:52.792 running . But uh Kelly is also a runner 10:52.960 --> 10:55.059 and she's uh completed the uh Disney 10:55.070 --> 10:57.299 Dopey Challenge . If you don't know 10:57.309 --> 10:59.476 what that is . It's a lot of running . 11:00.989 --> 11:02.809 It's a five K , a 10-K , a half 11:02.820 --> 11:04.598 marathon and a marathon in four 11:04.598 --> 11:07.440 consecutive days . Well , before uh meeting Dan , 11:18.396 --> 11:20.618 uh she's the daughter of a navy vet who 11:20.618 --> 11:22.951 served in World War Two as well as , uh , 11:22.951 --> 11:24.673 Vietnam also had a chance this 11:24.673 --> 11:26.673 afternoon to meet the , uh , uh , a 11:26.673 --> 11:29.007 number of , of Hulks that are here . Um , 11:29.007 --> 11:31.118 their daughter , Victoria , who's a , 11:31.118 --> 11:33.150 uh , uh , uh , captain and the air 11:33.159 --> 11:35.159 guard and , uh , works on the joint 11:35.159 --> 11:38.159 staff . And then 12:50.989 --> 12:53.156 he , uh , was a high school basketball 12:53.156 --> 12:55.156 coach . They were undefeated for 15 12:55.156 --> 12:58.250 years at home . That's pretty 12:58.260 --> 12:59.260 impressive . 13:04.320 --> 13:06.549 And then , um , Dan has his siblings 13:06.559 --> 13:08.559 here . And uh he had a chance 13:42.960 --> 13:44.849 to talk a little bit to his , his 13:44.849 --> 13:47.071 parents about uh where they live and he 13:47.071 --> 13:49.293 sits in the middle of nowhere on the uh 13:49.293 --> 13:51.349 Oregon California border . And I can 13:51.349 --> 13:53.627 see people nodding their heads . It is . 13:53.627 --> 13:55.682 She said , uh his mom mentioned they 13:55.682 --> 13:59.590 have a 70 mile driveway . It's like the 13:59.599 --> 14:02.400 only highway that comes into town . But 14:02.409 --> 14:04.520 let me switch gears and talk a little 14:04.520 --> 14:06.742 bit about Dan now and , and uh and just 14:06.742 --> 14:08.965 uh talk about uh maybe his motivation . 14:08.965 --> 14:11.076 His , his grandfather served . Uh his 14:11.076 --> 14:14.489 father served . Um he has uh a couple 14:14.500 --> 14:16.722 of uncles that served and so definitely 14:16.722 --> 14:19.000 coming from a military background . Um , 14:20.130 --> 14:22.408 he started off in junior college was a , 14:22.408 --> 14:24.519 uh , in high school , a triple , uh , 14:24.519 --> 14:26.408 sport , uh , athlete , football , 14:26.408 --> 14:28.574 basketball and track , did the same in 14:28.574 --> 14:30.797 junior college just running , uh , just 14:30.797 --> 14:32.852 running track , indoor , outdoor and 14:32.852 --> 14:35.019 cross country . Uh , but they ended up 14:35.019 --> 14:36.852 at , uh , at West Point where he 14:36.852 --> 14:39.074 graduated in 1986 with the uh degree in 14:39.074 --> 14:41.186 mechanical engineering , uh , with an 14:41.186 --> 14:43.352 aerospace focus . And so he joined the 14:43.352 --> 14:45.408 army because he wanted to uh fly and 14:45.408 --> 14:47.630 become an astronaut . We only got to do 14:47.630 --> 14:49.797 one of those didn't end up becoming an 14:49.797 --> 14:52.059 astronaut . Um But he went to uh 14:52.070 --> 14:54.419 originally to Fort Bragg , um and Fort 14:54.429 --> 14:56.929 Rucker uh where he started out as a in 14:56.940 --> 14:59.049 the aviation basic course . Then he 14:59.059 --> 15:01.281 went to Fort or California where he was 15:01.281 --> 15:03.448 in his second recon uh ninth cavalry . 15:03.448 --> 15:05.710 Uh was he his troop exo uh scout 15:05.719 --> 15:07.830 between leader flight ops officer and 15:07.830 --> 15:09.941 brigade aviation liaison officer . Uh 15:09.941 --> 15:11.941 there , he , he was responsible for 15:11.941 --> 15:14.163 readiness and , and tactical employment 15:14.163 --> 15:16.497 and control . One half of the squadrons , 15:16.497 --> 15:18.497 helicopter assets as well as work , 15:18.497 --> 15:20.663 flight training and scheduling and the 15:20.663 --> 15:20.510 like as well . And during that time 15:20.520 --> 15:22.409 frame , he had the opportunity to 15:22.409 --> 15:24.576 participate in uh operation just cause 15:24.576 --> 15:27.200 in uh in Panama . Then he went back to 15:27.210 --> 15:29.043 the advanced course and switched 15:29.043 --> 15:31.580 aircraft to the uh 64 Apache and then 15:31.590 --> 15:33.646 went to uh uh to Fort Hood where his 15:33.646 --> 15:37.280 assistant S3 . Um and uh as that he 15:37.289 --> 15:40.080 worked bringing on that helicopter into 15:40.090 --> 15:42.880 that particular unit . And then uh was 15:42.890 --> 15:44.760 responsible for uh the tactical 15:44.770 --> 15:47.179 operations and points for , for his uh 15:47.429 --> 15:49.900 for his battalion . Then he went to 15:49.909 --> 15:51.742 front point brack with his first 15:51.742 --> 15:53.853 opportunity to be a company commander 15:53.853 --> 15:56.020 um and worked uh worldwide contingency 15:56.020 --> 15:58.131 operations where he's responsible for 15:58.131 --> 16:00.242 all aspects of training , command and 16:00.242 --> 16:02.076 control combat readiness and was 16:02.076 --> 16:04.242 assigned the responsibility to develop 16:04.242 --> 16:06.409 the 34 soldiers that he was privileged 16:06.409 --> 16:08.630 to lead . Um , from there he went to 16:08.640 --> 16:10.640 Yuma , Arizona where he's a project 16:10.640 --> 16:13.169 engineer and , uh , did testing on a 16:13.179 --> 16:15.290 number of different aircraft . Um , H 16:15.290 --> 16:19.289 64 long bow , 0 58 delta , uh , uh , of 16:19.299 --> 16:22.419 the two , that's his nine years of 16:22.429 --> 16:24.429 active duty service . And then from 16:24.429 --> 16:26.651 there , he , uh , transitioned to the , 16:26.651 --> 16:28.707 uh , to the National Guard and , and 16:28.707 --> 16:31.040 went back to Oregon as part of the , uh , 16:31.040 --> 16:33.262 Oregon , uh , army National Guard . And 16:33.262 --> 16:32.960 his first job there was the aide de 16:32.969 --> 16:35.380 camp to the , uh , Adjutant General . 16:35.859 --> 16:37.859 And , uh , for those of us who have 16:37.859 --> 16:40.026 been eights , uh , you do a little bit 16:40.026 --> 16:42.192 of everything . You carry a bag around 16:42.192 --> 16:44.359 quite a bit . Um , and making sure the 16:44.359 --> 16:44.059 boss gets to the right place on time . 16:44.739 --> 16:47.072 Um , he did that for Major General Fred . 16:47.299 --> 16:49.521 Re remember that name because I'm gonna 16:49.521 --> 16:52.400 come back to it . He went on to be the 17:14.008 --> 17:16.119 operations officer and Aviation Opera 17:16.119 --> 17:18.260 uh uh for the uh 61st 66 41st medical 17:18.270 --> 17:21.349 Battalion uh which is responsible for 17:21.369 --> 17:25.060 uh air evac uh air evacuation uh 17:25.069 --> 17:27.300 plans and employment . And he worked 17:27.310 --> 17:29.310 also directly uh for the uh state 17:29.319 --> 17:31.619 Aviation Officer in all matters tied to 17:31.630 --> 17:33.880 aviation operations . Then he went off 17:33.890 --> 17:36.001 to get a little smarter , went to the 17:36.001 --> 17:38.112 uh Navy postgraduate school for a bit 17:38.112 --> 17:40.279 of time .
