Facts to talk to you about 00:19.980 --> 00:22.147 a disease that affects both adults and 00:22.147 --> 00:24.036 Children , but we're particularly 00:24.036 --> 00:26.258 worried about the littles here . Um and 00:26.258 --> 00:28.480 it's called RSV and RSV stands for resp 00:28.480 --> 00:31.370 respiratory sensation virus . Yeah . So 00:31.379 --> 00:33.470 RSV is uh often thought of as a cold 00:33.479 --> 00:35.646 virus , which is true , but in certain 00:35.646 --> 00:37.590 populations , it can extend to the 00:37.590 --> 00:39.646 lungs or cause more severe disease . 00:39.646 --> 00:41.790 Yeah . And this is especially true in 00:41.884 --> 00:44.264 infants and young Children who have 00:44.275 --> 00:46.665 small and narrow airways . Um One of 00:46.674 --> 00:48.896 the biggest ways this virus affects the 00:48.896 --> 00:50.730 respiratory respiratory tract is 00:50.730 --> 00:52.785 causing swelling and inflammation of 00:52.785 --> 00:54.785 the airway , which when babies have 00:54.785 --> 00:56.674 narrow airways can cause complete 00:56.674 --> 00:58.785 obstruction and failure to be able to 00:58.785 --> 01:01.029 breathe . I'm really excited . We can 01:01.040 --> 01:02.984 talk to the to you guys about this 01:02.984 --> 01:05.207 today right before our species begins . 01:05.207 --> 01:07.620 So a lot of cold viruses start to 01:07.629 --> 01:10.029 recirculate or surge around the school 01:10.040 --> 01:13.529 year um in the winter time and we have 01:13.540 --> 01:15.151 some additional items in our 01:15.151 --> 01:16.762 Armamentarium to protect our 01:16.762 --> 01:19.949 populations against RSD . Yeah . And so 01:20.010 --> 01:22.121 uh this will not be the second season 01:22.121 --> 01:24.930 now where we have protection for 01:24.940 --> 01:26.884 pregnant women and for our newborn 01:26.884 --> 01:29.290 infants to help protect babies for RSV . 01:29.730 --> 01:31.786 Yeah , I'm really excited about that 01:31.786 --> 01:33.952 and I'd like you to tell me more about 01:33.952 --> 01:35.730 it as I treat pretty much adult 01:35.730 --> 01:38.069 patients . So we have um a vaccine that 01:38.080 --> 01:39.913 women can get during their third 01:39.913 --> 01:42.349 trimester of pregnancy . So between 32 01:42.360 --> 01:44.949 and 36 weeks of pregnancy , um it's an 01:44.959 --> 01:47.709 RSV vaccine . It's given an Rob clinic . 01:47.720 --> 01:50.110 Moms can get that and that helps 01:50.120 --> 01:52.996 provide protection for their infant 01:53.005 --> 01:55.536 against respiratory sys virus for at 01:55.545 --> 01:57.805 least the first six months if not nine 01:57.816 --> 01:59.872 or more months . Um So certainly for 01:59.872 --> 02:02.325 that first RSV season for babies . Um 02:02.335 --> 02:05.515 and then for infants whose moms either 02:05.526 --> 02:07.693 didn't get the vaccine or weren't able 02:07.693 --> 02:09.748 to get the vaccine or were born less 02:09.755 --> 02:12.166 than two weeks after mom got vaccine . 02:12.296 --> 02:14.886 Um We have a medication called Nursing 02:15.031 --> 02:17.542 the A which helps protect babies 02:17.552 --> 02:20.761 through that first full RSV season . Um 02:20.772 --> 02:23.222 and we that's the season , both the 02:23.231 --> 02:26.792 vaccine and the nsima medication for 02:26.802 --> 02:28.981 the babies are seasonal . Um And so we 02:28.992 --> 02:32.481 can also give the nursed to babies who 02:32.492 --> 02:34.871 maybe were born before they could have 02:34.882 --> 02:37.104 got it in the nursery um , and they can 02:37.104 --> 02:38.993 get it in clinic . I think that's 02:38.993 --> 02:40.882 wonderful and I know we certainly 02:40.882 --> 02:42.882 immunize uh pregnant women in their 02:42.882 --> 02:44.549 third trimester against other 02:44.549 --> 02:46.438 communicable diseases to transfer 02:46.438 --> 02:48.715 pregnant uh protection to their babies . 02:48.715 --> 02:50.882 So , it's wonderful . We're able to do 02:50.882 --> 02:53.049 this and this medication is offered in 02:53.049 --> 02:52.479 the newborn nursery . That's very , 02:52.490 --> 02:54.434 very convenient . And the catch up 02:54.434 --> 02:56.546 program is wonderful as well . Yeah . 02:56.546 --> 02:58.880 And so , uh it can be got during that 02:58.889 --> 03:00.889 birth hospitalization before babies 03:00.889 --> 03:03.056 leave the hospital , one less thing to 03:03.056 --> 03:05.222 worry about upon going home . But then 03:05.222 --> 03:07.278 also can be done either as a walk in 03:07.278 --> 03:09.167 visit in our clinic , um probably 03:09.167 --> 03:10.778 starting in October um or by 03:10.778 --> 03:12.778 appointment if they're having other 03:12.778 --> 03:15.056 well visits too . So it's really great . 03:15.056 --> 03:17.222 Um And it can be given to babies up to 03:17.222 --> 03:19.445 eight months old . Um and then for very 03:19.445 --> 03:19.059 high risk babies even up to 19 months 03:19.070 --> 03:22.389 old , if they're um have other lung or 03:22.399 --> 03:24.621 medical problems , that would make them 03:24.621 --> 03:26.899 more susceptible to severe RSD disease . 03:26.899 --> 03:29.121 Um I'm so grateful for this . Um I'm an 03:29.121 --> 03:31.177 anti to a preemie and I know we were 03:31.177 --> 03:33.121 very worried about RSB when we had 03:33.121 --> 03:35.455 older treat uh uh prevention strategies . 03:35.455 --> 03:37.677 So um I'm glad we have this now . We we 03:37.677 --> 03:39.789 have a , a vaccine for nonpregnant 03:39.800 --> 03:42.070 patients as well . We do have a vaccine 03:42.080 --> 03:45.169 available for older persons aged 60 up . 03:45.179 --> 03:47.012 And you can get that at the Bams 03:47.012 --> 03:48.623 Infectious Diseases Clinic , 03:48.623 --> 03:50.790 immunization clinic . Yeah .
