I am a prior enlisted uh 00:17.100 --> 00:19.267 Fleet Marine Force hospital corpsman . 00:19.399 --> 00:21.343 Um I worked with some really great 00:21.343 --> 00:23.566 nurses um both on deployment and in the 00:23.566 --> 00:25.799 hospital and I had wonderful enlisted 00:25.809 --> 00:27.698 leadership that kind of guided me 00:27.698 --> 00:29.799 towards this path . Um It , it felt 00:29.809 --> 00:31.920 like a very natural progression to go 00:31.920 --> 00:33.970 from enlisted uh medicine into 00:33.979 --> 00:36.201 commission service as a navy nurse . Uh 00:36.201 --> 00:38.423 So a little bit about my specialty . Um 00:38.423 --> 00:41.020 we uh take care of the tiniest patients 00:41.029 --> 00:43.770 that our military has to offer . Um My 00:43.779 --> 00:46.259 favorite clinical in nursing school was 00:46.270 --> 00:49.389 the well newborn nursery . Um And what 00:49.400 --> 00:51.567 really solidified being a part of this 00:51.567 --> 00:53.599 community for me is that both of my 00:53.610 --> 00:55.332 sons were born in the neonatal 00:55.332 --> 00:57.919 intensive care unit . So some really 00:57.930 --> 01:00.389 unique experiences for me . Um uh in 01:00.400 --> 01:02.567 particular as a neonatal critical care 01:02.567 --> 01:04.622 nurse is that we get to see a lot of 01:04.622 --> 01:06.789 first , a lot of our patients are with 01:06.789 --> 01:08.956 us for several months . Um We're there 01:08.956 --> 01:11.660 for um the first bath the first time 01:11.669 --> 01:13.613 they breastfeed or bottle feed the 01:13.613 --> 01:15.669 first time that their parents get to 01:15.669 --> 01:18.002 hold them , which may not be right away . 01:18.002 --> 01:20.225 Um One of the most special things about 01:20.225 --> 01:22.391 uh being part of the neonatal critical 01:22.391 --> 01:24.391 care community is when you've taken 01:24.391 --> 01:26.558 care of a baby for several months , um 01:26.558 --> 01:28.613 sometimes six months and the parents 01:28.613 --> 01:30.558 invite you to their first birthday 01:30.558 --> 01:32.725 party . So one of the things that Navy 01:32.725 --> 01:35.069 nursing offers um that civilian jobs do 01:35.080 --> 01:37.690 not is a vast variety of assignments . 01:37.809 --> 01:40.419 My previous duty station before um camp 01:40.430 --> 01:43.150 Lejeune was in Iwo , Kuni , Japan . And 01:43.160 --> 01:45.382 it was really , it was a really awesome 01:45.382 --> 01:47.327 experience to learn about Japanese 01:47.327 --> 01:49.160 medicine . Um I got to work with 01:49.160 --> 01:51.110 Japanese neonatologists , Japanese 01:51.120 --> 01:54.230 obstetricians and nurses . Um and that 01:54.239 --> 01:57.029 experience um is is unlike anything in 01:57.040 --> 01:59.680 the civilian world . So the thing that 01:59.690 --> 02:01.690 keeps me in the Navy are all of the 02:01.690 --> 02:03.857 great leadership opportunities that we 02:03.857 --> 02:06.023 have in the Navy . I've gotten to lead 02:06.023 --> 02:08.079 uh many enlisted hospital corpsmen , 02:08.079 --> 02:10.246 many Navy nurses , civilian nurses and 02:10.246 --> 02:12.289 physicians , uh the educational 02:12.300 --> 02:14.630 opportunities um keep me in the navy . 02:14.639 --> 02:16.750 I've been able to complete a Bachelor 02:16.750 --> 02:18.861 of Science in nursing , a master's of 02:18.861 --> 02:20.806 science in nursing and a doctor of 02:20.806 --> 02:23.083 nursing practice all while in the Navy . 02:23.083 --> 02:25.028 Um And with no financial cost that 02:25.028 --> 02:27.083 there , there are so many reasons to 02:27.083 --> 02:29.389 stay . And I , that's my plan to keep 02:29.399 --> 02:33.050 going . The legacy that I would like to 02:33.059 --> 02:35.281 leave for Navy Nursing um in particular 02:35.281 --> 02:38.960 to my community is whenever parents 02:38.970 --> 02:41.026 have a baby , even if it's a healthy 02:41.026 --> 02:43.160 baby , that's a scary experience when 02:43.169 --> 02:45.336 parents have a sick baby , that can be 02:45.336 --> 02:47.502 an overwhelming experience . And , and 02:47.502 --> 02:49.502 what I want my legacy to be is that 02:49.502 --> 02:51.502 when those parents remember back on 02:51.502 --> 02:53.725 those scary times that a navy nurse was 02:53.725 --> 02:54.800 there to care for their baby .
