Um 00:28.809 --> 00:31.389 coming up shortly now on about 20 years 00:31.399 --> 00:33.455 of service and it's been a fantastic 00:33.455 --> 00:35.788 adventure as I did subsequent rotations . 00:35.788 --> 00:38.529 I realized that uh OBGYN was the 00:38.540 --> 00:42.040 perfect specialty for me . Uh It mixes 00:42.049 --> 00:44.216 a lot of things that I really enjoy in 00:44.216 --> 00:46.271 medicine . So it's very procedural , 00:46.271 --> 00:48.493 it's very surgically oriented . You get 00:48.493 --> 00:50.605 to be involved in people's lives at , 00:50.605 --> 00:52.771 at usually one of the most happy times 00:52.771 --> 00:52.770 in their lives , but unfortunately , 00:52.779 --> 00:54.779 sometimes one of the worst times in 00:54.779 --> 00:57.150 their lives as well . Um You deal with 00:57.159 --> 00:59.492 emergency medicine , infectious disease , 00:59.492 --> 01:01.680 endocrinology , uh radiology , doing 01:01.689 --> 01:03.856 your own ultrasound . So it's a mix of 01:03.856 --> 01:05.911 so many great things in medicine all 01:05.911 --> 01:08.559 into one specialty . So this is such a 01:08.569 --> 01:10.458 unique specialty because it is so 01:10.458 --> 01:13.230 family oriented and the bonds you make 01:13.239 --> 01:15.295 with these families , whether you're 01:15.295 --> 01:17.295 taking care of the patient from the 01:17.295 --> 01:19.406 very beginning of their pregnancy all 01:19.406 --> 01:21.461 the way through delivery , or you're 01:21.461 --> 01:21.449 meeting them for the first time and 01:21.459 --> 01:23.181 then you're taking them for an 01:23.181 --> 01:25.181 emergency c section and you have to 01:25.181 --> 01:27.015 bring that sense of calmness but 01:27.015 --> 01:29.237 expertise to make sure that they have a 01:29.237 --> 01:31.237 healthy outcome for the mom and the 01:31.237 --> 01:33.403 baby as well . So the Navy opens up so 01:33.403 --> 01:35.570 many different opportunities . Whether 01:35.570 --> 01:37.459 that's you want to train straight 01:37.459 --> 01:39.570 through or you want to train and then 01:39.570 --> 01:41.737 go out work with the marines , work on 01:41.737 --> 01:43.903 a ship , come back to your specialty . 01:43.903 --> 01:46.250 Um I've had the opportunity to deploy 01:46.260 --> 01:49.309 to Afghanistan as an Ogin . But then , 01:49.470 --> 01:51.137 you know , I got to work with 01:51.137 --> 01:52.970 neurosurgeons , got to work with 01:52.970 --> 01:55.137 orthopedic surgeons , got to work with 01:55.137 --> 01:57.192 uh er doctors , there's no specialty 01:57.192 --> 01:59.359 and there's no civilian program that's 01:59.359 --> 02:01.581 going to allow you to do that . You can 02:01.581 --> 02:03.692 practice all over the world , you get 02:03.692 --> 02:05.803 to go , you can go to Italy , you can 02:05.803 --> 02:08.026 go to Spain , you can go to Japan , you 02:08.026 --> 02:07.720 can go to Guam so many different 02:07.730 --> 02:10.710 opportunities for travel and for taking 02:10.720 --> 02:12.887 care of the patient population , which 02:12.887 --> 02:14.776 is really what it's all about our 02:14.776 --> 02:16.887 active duty . Sailors and marines are 02:16.887 --> 02:18.720 just fantastic people . They are 02:18.720 --> 02:20.776 devoting their lives , they're going 02:20.776 --> 02:22.942 forward and we get that opportunity to 02:22.942 --> 02:24.887 take care of them and take care of 02:24.887 --> 02:24.470 their family members when they're 02:24.479 --> 02:25.050 deployed .
