Since 9 11 , the 00:38.060 --> 00:40.227 south Carolina National Guard engineer 00:40.227 --> 00:42.210 assets have deployed time and time 00:42.210 --> 00:45.090 again conducting missions in Iraq , 00:45.100 --> 00:48.160 Afghanistan , kuwait Dubai 00:48.540 --> 00:52.010 Romania , Liberia and Uzbekistan , 00:52.080 --> 00:55.320 among others . The south Carolina 00:55.330 --> 00:57.380 engineer service members completed 00:57.380 --> 00:59.390 missions such as vertical and 00:59.390 --> 01:01.920 horizontal construction operations , 01:02.190 --> 01:04.560 surveying and assessments , well 01:04.560 --> 01:07.800 drilling , firefighting , multi role 01:07.800 --> 01:10.190 bridging , and combat engineer 01:10.190 --> 01:13.590 operations . In fall of 2002 , they 01:13.600 --> 01:15.711 received notification , they would be 01:15.711 --> 01:17.910 mobilizing to Iraq as the largest 01:17.910 --> 01:20.390 mobilization up to that point since 01:20.390 --> 01:24.100 World War II . Late Fall of 2002 , 01:24.110 --> 01:27.720 General Mayberry , who was the Troop 01:27.720 --> 01:30.940 command commander showed up in the F . 01:30.940 --> 01:33.162 M . O . Office on the week , you know , 01:33.162 --> 01:35.051 during the week and and basically 01:35.051 --> 01:37.218 pulled me into the office and shut the 01:37.218 --> 01:39.384 door and he said , I got some news for 01:39.384 --> 01:41.107 you . We arrived at Fort Stewart 02:19.830 --> 02:22.940 on one March and then we arrived in 02:22.940 --> 02:26.660 theatre on the 15th April at the time , 02:26.660 --> 02:30.250 it was the largest uh mobilization of 02:30.250 --> 02:32.460 any south Carolina National Guard unit 02:32.460 --> 02:35.390 since World War Two At the time . And 02:35.390 --> 02:38.540 it's 521 folks , nine different 02:38.540 --> 02:40.260 armories were impacted . 02:41.040 --> 02:44.980 UB 278 pieces of rolling stock . 02:44.990 --> 02:47.268 Everything we own went to Fort Stewart . 02:47.640 --> 02:51.290 And uh and within uh 45 days were in 02:51.290 --> 02:54.790 theater . In Iraq after the 03:14.936 --> 03:17.158 equipment rolled off the boat . So we , 03:17.158 --> 03:19.400 you know , we constantly playing while 03:19.400 --> 03:21.456 we were in the desert waiting on our 03:21.456 --> 03:23.567 equipment to show up And then we went 03:23.567 --> 03:26.130 into Iraq in addition to the more than 03:26.130 --> 03:28.250 500 service members from the South 03:28.250 --> 03:30.940 Carolina National Guard . The full task 03:30.940 --> 03:33.190 force included an additional 300 03:33.200 --> 03:35.200 engineer service members from other 03:35.200 --> 03:37.540 units . The engineer soldiers 03:37.540 --> 03:39.151 contributed to repairing the 03:39.151 --> 03:41.480 infrastructures of schools , major 03:41.480 --> 03:44.060 bridges working on the Haditha Dam 03:44.070 --> 03:47.030 supported 28 combat operations , 03:47.040 --> 03:48.830 provided security of critical 03:48.830 --> 03:51.600 infrastructure Firefighting and much 03:51.600 --> 03:53.650 more over the span of the 15 month 03:53.650 --> 03:56.900 deployment . They also experienced the 03:56.900 --> 03:58.750 realities of war with combat 03:58.750 --> 04:01.600 engagements , ambushes and improvised 04:01.600 --> 04:04.050 explosive devices . When we got just 04:04.050 --> 04:06.470 south of Baghdad , we hung a left on on 04:06.470 --> 04:09.900 highway one that runs from Baghdad to 04:09.900 --> 04:12.970 Jordan , basically interstate kind of 04:12.970 --> 04:16.450 thing . And crossing through Fallujah 04:16.940 --> 04:20.840 is when we we took first fire . It 04:20.840 --> 04:24.040 was about May , late May , just prior 04:24.040 --> 04:27.940 to the rip With the 54th when the 04:27.940 --> 04:31.920 first I'd went on from from May until 04:32.330 --> 04:36.140 late That fall , you know , it just 04:36.150 --> 04:40.030 uh they increased exponentially . So when police went 16:37.437 --> 16:39.659 out to uh interact with the people , we 16:39.659 --> 16:41.770 would teach them how to pull security 16:41.770 --> 16:43.770 and keep themselves safe . We would 16:43.770 --> 16:43.480 also teach them how to do 16:43.480 --> 16:45.591 administrative functions like playing 16:45.591 --> 16:47.758 out an operation .
