00:00.723 --> 00:03.140
(soft music)

00:10.610 --> 00:12.460
- Hi everyone. This is Chaplain Burson,

00:12.460 --> 00:15.600
and today's thought is on making room.

00:15.600 --> 00:19.220
Most of us remember that
on December 7th, 1941,

00:19.220 --> 00:22.540
Japan launched a surprise
attack on Pearl Harbor.

00:22.540 --> 00:25.360
But just a few hours
later, on December 8th,

00:25.360 --> 00:28.360
the Japanese also
attacked the Philippines.

00:28.360 --> 00:31.950
After hiding for three weeks,
Second Lieutenant Ruby Bradley

00:31.950 --> 00:36.560
a US Army surgical nurse, was
captured by Japanese soldiers.

00:36.560 --> 00:37.710
She spent the rest of the war

00:37.710 --> 00:40.090
as a POW in three different camps.

00:40.090 --> 00:43.220
And in all of them, the
conditions were terrible.

00:43.220 --> 00:46.490
She was given only one
cup of rice a day to eat.

00:46.490 --> 00:48.570
But still she gave part of her food

00:48.570 --> 00:51.560
to the hungry children who
were in the camp with her.

00:51.560 --> 00:54.610
As her weight dropped to only 84 pounds,

00:54.610 --> 00:56.880
she used the extra room in her uniform

00:56.880 --> 00:59.110
to smuggle more food for the children,

00:59.110 --> 01:00.940
and even surgical equipment

01:00.940 --> 01:03.990
to perform operations on sick prisoners.

01:03.990 --> 01:08.510
During her internment, she
assisted with 230 surgeries,

01:08.510 --> 01:11.160
and delivered 13 babies.

01:11.160 --> 01:13.960
Bradley was freed in
1945, but she continued

01:13.960 --> 01:16.050
to serve as a nurse.

01:16.050 --> 01:18.820
In 1950, she was serving in Korea,

01:18.820 --> 01:20.910
during the Chinese counter-offensive.

01:20.910 --> 01:24.240
And during the evacuation,
she refused to board the plane

01:24.240 --> 01:28.670
to safety, until she first
ensured that there was room

01:28.670 --> 01:30.440
for all of the wounded.

01:30.440 --> 01:35.440
Even though she was surrounded
by 100,000 Chinese soldiers.

01:35.510 --> 01:38.610
Finally, she was the very last
person to get on the plane,

01:38.610 --> 01:41.693
just as an ambulance exploded behind her.

01:42.550 --> 01:45.940
Colonel Bradley, retired as
one of the most decorated

01:45.940 --> 01:49.300
women in United States military history,

01:49.300 --> 01:51.630
including earning the Red Crosses'

01:51.630 --> 01:56.580
Florence Nightingale medal and
the title Angel in Fatigues,

01:56.580 --> 01:57.943
from her fellow soldiers.

01:59.280 --> 02:02.140
Seeing all of those
costs that Colonel paid

02:02.140 --> 02:05.820
to care for others, like losing weight,

02:05.820 --> 02:09.450
or losing her seat on the plane
that could saved her life,

02:09.450 --> 02:12.140
these are reminders of why
it's, so many of us fear

02:12.140 --> 02:14.330
making sacrifices for others.

02:14.330 --> 02:16.430
There's a real cost to it.

02:16.430 --> 02:19.440
But in "The Paradox of
Generosity", Christian Smith

02:19.440 --> 02:22.440
and Hilary Davidson show
through research a truth

02:22.440 --> 02:25.070
that has been in the writings
of philosophers, wise men,

02:25.070 --> 02:28.300
religious leaders throughout the ages.

02:28.300 --> 02:31.090
And you'll find it in the
story of Ruby Bradley.

02:31.090 --> 02:36.090
That in giving we receive, and
in grasping we actually lose.

02:37.100 --> 02:39.360
When we make room for
others, we also make room

02:39.360 --> 02:42.970
for more joy, and more
love in our own lives.

02:42.970 --> 02:47.910
As Proverbs 11:25 says, "A
generous person will prosper,

02:47.910 --> 02:51.690
whoever refreshes others
will be refreshed."

02:51.690 --> 02:52.690
Blessings this week.
