Lake Lanier is part of a much larger system. Even during dry periods, water must continue flowing downstream to support drinking water for metropolitan Atlanta, maintain water quality, and allow communities to return treated wastewater safely to the river.
These releases may surprise some visitors, but they are part of normal reservoir operations that keep the entire system functioning.
With a little awareness, we can still safely enjoy the lake whether we are on the water or along the shoreline.
