As early as 1971, the Department of Defense identified joint interoperability of communications between DOD users as a critical requirement for effective mission accomplishment. Within a year, testing and evaluation offices were headquartered at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona. By 1987, the Defense Communications Agency, DISA’s predecessor, combined the many different suborganizations into the Joint Interoperability Test Center. JITC’s headquarters remained at Ft. Huachuca and in 1999, they changed their name to the Joint Interoperability Test Command. Coming closer to home, JITC opened a facility at DISA Headquarters in Ft. Meade, MD with the advent of DISA’s own move north from Arlington, VA. Today, JITC continues to support the warfighter by providing cutting edge testing and evaluation for the entire Department of Defense.
