Spc. Patrick Fisher and Sgt. Aixha Linares, Troopers assigned to 1st Cavalry Division, explain their participation in the Maverick Spur Ride on Fort Hood, Texas, Dec. 17, 2025. The spur ride is a team-building exercise and a rite of passage for U.S. Army Soldiers who wish to honor the tradition and history of the mounted cavalry, enduring many hours of military tasks, skills, and knowledge, culminating in the spur ceremony, where they earn the title of spur-holder and are allowed to wear their silver spurs on the heels of their boots. Fisher participated as a mentor to the spur candidates like Linares throughout the duration of the event, and they both describe the qualities and attitudes necessary to complete the ceremonial military exercise.
