Wood -- sourced from local, sustainably managed forests and made by people right here in the United States -- is used to construct the buildings of the future. That’s one goal the Forest Service and industry are partnering to achieve.
Through our Wood Innovations grant programs, the Forest Service is investing in expanding markets for wood products up and down the value chain. One way we are doing this is by investing in facilities like Freres Engineered Wood, which makes mass timber panels that can be used in large commercial buildings or multiunit apartments.
Freres isn’t your old school sawmill. Freres's mass timber panels are made by binding together thin sheets of veneer to make a construction material that is versatile and strong enough to replace concrete and steel in construction. (USDA Forest Service Video)
