Recruits participate in Firefighting at U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command (RTC), Great Lakes, Illinois. Recruits have five days of classroom lectures and hands-on fire team training, they learn about basic shipboard damage control, how to combat flooding, how to make casualty reports, the chemistry of fire, and how fire is extinguished. By the end of training, they man a hose as a team and give orders at the scene to put out the fire rapidly and safely. Boot camp is approximately 10 weeks and all enlistees into the U.S. Navy begin their careers at the command. More than 40,000 Recruits train annually at the Navy’s only boot camp.
