Narration:
Fire Prevention Week was observed in the Camp Zama community from October 8th through the 14th. Fire and Emergency Services personnel from U.S. Army Garrison Japan’s Directorate of Emergency Services hosted several events during the week to increase the community’s awareness of fire safety.
Interview: Hiromi Oliva, Assistant Fire Chief – Prevention, Fire and Emergency Services, DES, USAG Japan
This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week is “Cooking Safety Starts With You,” and it is particularly focused on preventing kitchen fires. Many house fires start in the kitchen, so throughout Fire Prevention Week, we emphasized to those living on the installation the importance of practicing good fire safety. But today, our intent was to spend time with our community and familiarize them with our firefighters, which I believe we were successful in doing.
Narration:
As part of the weeklong observance, firefighters and inspectors from DES brought out various firefighting equipment on display, allowing community members to get hands-on experience with the gear. Activities included walking through a Fire Safety House, a structure used for educational purposes, trying on firefighter gear, rolling a 50-foot-long fire hose, and spraying water. And of course, the children could meet Sparky the Fire Dog, a mascot who helps to reinforce the importance of fire safety.

This is my first time to participate in Fire Prevention Week. My role in today’s event was to support spraying the water hose, and I also handled evacuation training during Fire Prevention Week. I think this was a great event because I was able to communicate with our community members and help them to understand our role here on the installation.
Narration:
Fire Prevention Week was established in 1925 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire. It is the longest running public health and safety observance on record and offers community members a way to increase their fire safety awareness.
