U.S. Army paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade participate in the Brig. Gen. Darby 40-mile challenge at Lake Garda, Italy, April 28, 2023. More than 1,200 paratroopers participated in the event.
Participants must complete a 40 mile route in 12 hours or less, honoring Brig. Gen. William Darby and 25 other Soldiers from 10th Mountain division who were among the last Americans to be killed in action in the European theater of WWII.
The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army's Contingency Response Force in Europe, providing rapidly deployable forces to the United States European, African, and Central Command areas of responsibility. Forward deployed across Italy and Germany, the brigade routinely trains alongside NATO allies and partners to build partnerships and strengthen the alliance.
