The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska District joined Gov. Mike Dunleavy, the Air Force, Eklutna Tribe and Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. for a groundbreaking ceremony of the 16/34 runway extension Oct. 14, 2022 on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. The extension will lengthen the runway by about 2,500 feet and allow JBER to have two functional runways of about 10,000-feet long each. The project also includes the first storm water subsurface infiltration system to be installed on the installation. Constructing the expansion will require 170,000 tons of asphalt paving, 57,000 linear feet of utility piping and 280,000 cubic yards of topsoil. Not only is it the largest construction contract the district has awarded to date, but is the largest construction project in U.S. Pacific Air Forces’ area of operation.
