U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District

Over the last 150 years, Charleston District has been at the forefront of modern engineering. Since the late 1800s and early 1900s, we have built fortresses and military bases, created an inland marine highway, and have maintained the Charleston Harbor every year for 140 years.

Among our most enduring and significant impacts is the deepening and widening — the modernization — of Charleston Harbor.

In partnership with South Carolina Ports Authority, the project sponsor, and countless others, today Charleston District is deepening the harbor to a historic depth of 52 feet, giving Charleston the deepest harbor on the east coast. The new depth — achieved by the end of next year — will also enable the world's largest ships safe passage into Charleston any time, at any tide.

This most current deepening project, which first began as a study in 2012, has spanned seven commanders and is a testament to the District’s collaboration and continued commitment to the growth and prosperity of South Carolina and the nation.

To put the project in perspective: the Ravenel Bridge is the only other similarly incredible $600 million infrastructure project in the Lowcountry — and one that can be seen for miles.
