SOCAFRICA leaders reflect on the meaning of Juneteenth. U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jammail Perkins, a native Texan from a town near Galveston, organized, led and cooked for the first celebration of Juneteenth June 25th in Stuttgart, Germany. The event was planned well in advance of notice the day was to become a national holiday. It was originally scheduled for June 18, but was cancelled when Juneteenth was declared a national holiday and all potential participants were given the day off.
