U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Journey Collier is a 35th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter stationed with the 35th Fighter Wing at Misawa Air Base, Japan. SSgt Journey Collier, from Yamhill, Oregon, won the 2020 Air Force Firefighter of the Year and will move on to compete at the DoD level. She also excelled in her Airman Leadership School course, earning three awards: ALS Distinguished Graduate, Academic Achievement, and the Profession of Arms. SSgt Collier was named the Air Force's Firefighter of the Year for various outstanding achievements on and off duty throughout the year, including cutting 135 hours of in-processing time for new Airmen, conducting virtual fire station tours for local schools amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and conducting training with firefighters from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. SSgt Collier continues to strive for excellence as she leaves the active duty enlisted force to complete education through the Professional Officer Course-Early Release Program (POC-ERP) commissioning program, before returning to the Air Force as a commissioned officer.
