Marine Corps Installations Pacific - Marine Corps Base Camp Butler brings honor and remembrance for the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, Operation Tomodachi. The Tohoku Great East Japan Earthquake hit off the coast of Japan March 11, 2011, triggering a tsunami that reached heights up to 130 feet and traveled six miles inland. It was the largest earthquake ever recorded in Japan. Following the disaster, Japan and it's foreign nation allies began the long journey toward recovery. Amongst the U.S. Military, the mission was named Operation Tomodachi. Tomodachi is the Japanese Word for the English word, friend. (U.S. Marine Corps motion imagery by Lance Cpl. Faith Rose)
