On May 5, 1945, American soldiers liberated those interned at the Mauthausen concentration camp. Among those rescued was Tibor Rubin, a teenager who thought he was condemned to perish in the Holocaust. While being treated by American medics, Rubin swore to repay the country that rescued him.
Rubin entered the U.S. in 1948 and immediately tried to enlist with the military. In two years, he made it in, motivated by the prospects of repaying the country which saved him. He was sent to participate in the Korean War.
In summer 1950, Rubin’s sergeant sent him to single-handedly defend a strategic hill with hopes of buying time for fellow American GIs to escape. Though faced with a seemingly never-ending stream of enemy troops, Tibor stood his ground. He managed to defend the hill for 24-hours, affording his fellow soldiers enough time to successfully retreat.
Even under moments of duress, Rubin’s commitment to his comrades remained firm. In October, Rubin and his company were captured by Chinese troops and forcibly took part in a death march. Rubin’s captors repeatedly tested his resolve by offering him repatriation to his native Hungary. He rejected these offers and remained by the side of his comrades. He snuck out of the camp and broke into enemy storehouses to bring food for his fellow prisoners, all while knowing he risked being shot if caught.
We honor his service.
