    North American Aerospace Defense Command

North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command announced its 2019 annual award winners in a virtual presentation at the Command headquarters building August 6.

The award winners represent a diverse, bi-national spectrum of military and government civilians from the headquarters staff as well as personnel from the three NORAD Regions, five USNORTHCOM Components and three Joint Task Forces.

General Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy, NORAD and USNORTHCOM Commander praised the award winners and all Command personnel for ensuring that the missions and critical homeland defense operations continued uninterrupted despite the COVID pandemic.

“This year has been incredibly challenging. Together we have faced multiple missions and the adversity of a global pandemic,” said O’Shaughnessy. “Throughout the past year, each of our nominees performed above and beyond. They represent the best of our commands.”

The award winners would normally receive their accolades at an official ceremony at the Commands’ headquarters. However, the COVID-19 pandemic prohibited any official travel to Peterson AFB.

“Next year, we look forward to hosting all of you here in Colorado Springs,” said Sgt. Maj. Paul McKenna, NORAD and USNORTHCOM Command Senior Enlisted Leader. “Until then, congratulations on a job well done!”

    The award winners include:

    Junior Enlisted:
    • SSgt Gary Gillespie (USAF), Continental U.S. NORAD Region, from Binghamton, New York
    • SSgt Artyom Kononenko (USAF), Air Forces Northern, from Miami, Florida
    • Sgt Danette Weyh (RCAF), Canadian NORAD Region, from Mary’s Harbour, Labrador

    Senior Non-Commissioned Officer
    • MSgt Craig Belcher (USAF), Air Forces Northern, from Fort Worth, Texas

    Company Grade Officer
    • Capt Robert Carnall (USAF), Continental U.S. NORAD Region, from Panama City, Florida
    • Capt James Laughridge (USAF), Air Forces Northern, from Panama City, Florida

    Field Grade Officer

    • Lt Col Michael Jewell (USAF), USNORTHCOM Headquarters, from Altus, Oklahoma and Mountain Home, Arkansas
    • Maj Sherri Stanfill (USAF), Continental U.S. NORAD Region, from Moultrie, Georgia

Like their military counterparts, civilian award categories are established so employees of similar grades can compete with their peers.

    Civilian Category I
    • Ms. Taylor Mochowski, NORAD and USNORTHCOM Headquarters, from Colorado Springs, Colorado
    • Mrs. Margaret Morgan, Continental U.S. NORAD Region, from Panama City, Florida

    Civilian Category II
    • Mr. Sonepith Keoviengsamay, Continental U.S. NORAD Region, from Rome, New York
    • Mrs. Christine Torres, Joint Task Force North, from Brunswick, Ohio

    • Mr. Michael Harrison, NORAD and USNORTHCOM Headquarters, from Brook Park, Ohio

    Civilian Category IV
    • Mr. Daniel Robbins, U.S. Army North, Dawsonville, Georgia

Homeland defense is the top priority for NORAD and USNORTHCOM. NORAD is a bi-national command focused on the defense of both the United States and Canada; the response to potential aerospace threats does not distinguish between the two nations and draws on forces from both countries.

The three NORAD Regions are the Alaskan NORAD Region, the Canadian NORAD Region and the Continental U.S. NORAD Region.

USNORTHCOM partners to conduct homeland defense, civil support and security cooperation to defend and secure the United States and its interests.

USNORTHCOM Units are comprised of Alaskan Command, U.S. Special Operations Command, North, U.S. Marine Forces Northern Command, U.S. Fleet Forces Command/U.S. Navy North, Air Forces Northern, U.S. Army North, Joint Task Force North, Joint Task Force Civil Support and Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region.
