Sagamihara City hosts three-hour endurance bicycle race:

    Narration:
More than 800 cyclists competed in the 9th annual three-hour endurance bicycle race November 18th during the Sagamihara Cycle Festival. This year marked the first time the event was held on the area of land jointly used by both Sagamihara City and the U.S. Army.

Interview: Yasuo Mitsuka, Chairman, Sagamihara Cycle Event
The reason we held this race today is that Japan will host the Olympics in Tokyo next year, and part of the route for the road bicycle race will be in Sagamihara City. In order to heighten enthusiasm for the Olympic bicycle event among the citizens of Sagamihara City, we thought it was a great opportunity to have today’s event held here.

    Narration:
The race was a relay-style event where teams of two to 10 cyclists traded of multiple laps of the nearly 1.7-mile course, aiming to complete the longest distance within the three-hour time limit. The race was open to competitors in beginner-, intermediate- and advance-level divisions. Nearly 300 teams competed in the race, including two teams from U.S. Army Japan.

Interview: Masaki Koda, U.S. Army MEDDAC Japan
Sgt. 1st Class Cruz asked me to race today, so this was my first time meeting the other members of the team, but I think our team had great teamwork and worked really well together, considering this was our first time. However, the other teams from local area were really fast. I just kept pedaling, trying to keep the pace, but today’s event was a lot of fun.

    Interview: Ryousuke Miyazaki, Event Participant
The course was well maintained and very smooth to ride on. I think this is a great thing that the U.S. Army and Sagamihara City are working together to promote sports events like this.

    Narration:
Participant Yuka Toyoshima, a member of the Wincome Racing Team, had a personal reason for competing in the race.

    Interview: Yuka Toyoshima, Event Participant
One of our team members died last month, which was very sad. We were all feeling down, so I thought we could do something to refresh ourselves and spend the day riding together, so we decided to enter today’s event. I thought the course was very technical and required skill in order to maneuver in such a large pack of racers, but it was very fun.

    Narration:
The U.S. Army teams did not win in their divisions, but finished respectably. The team “Breaking Wind” placed 87th, while the Camp Zama Peddlers placed 149th.
The winners of the race were the MAME Cycling Team. They biked 39 laps for a total distance of 22 miles.
