National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from 15 September - 15 October of each year. Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for Hispanic Heritage Month because it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on Sept. 16, and Chile on Sept. 18. BACH Command Sergeant Major Daniel Santiago shares a bit about his Puerto Rican culture and how the island came to be associated with the United States.
